The goal of this project is to evaluate the potential for herbs (medicinal and culinary) to grow in Kansas. Test plots were set up in Wichita, Olathe, Colby, Hays, and Manhattan, and with the help of Master Gardeners and field staff, we were able to evaluate over 60 species. Of these, 30 are described in fact sheets. A notebook has been created for those who might consider growing herbs for income. A business planning guide, and pricing information is included in the notebook, along with the fact sheets.
The Great Plains Herb Growers Association was created as a sister organization to this research project, to provide support and information. Due to the low price for herb on the market now, this organization is somewhat dormant, but the steering committee can reactivate if there is interest in doing so. Read the Great Plains Herb Growers Association organizational structure and bylaws (pdf).
