Alan Stevens was born in Chicago, Ill. He claims his earliest interest in horticulture came from weeding his grandmother’s flower beds when he was growing up and then working in greenhouses by the time he was 12 years old. Since those early introductions to plants, Stevens worked for close to 30 years in the horticulture industry before deciding to get his doctorate at Texas A&M University. While in College Station, Stevens co-taught a course with an extension specialist, who convinced him to get a job in extension. He then took an open position at K-State, upon completion at Texas A&M.
